Democrats were all too happy to expand the scope of the executive’s power during Obama’s tenure in office, but now that Trump has won, they are beginning to regret the decision.
In particular, Democrats are afraid that Trump could have unlimited war powers since they never passed a war authorization act to fight the Islamic State. This failure to show the world the US was serious about combatting the radical group has opened the door for Trump to do it and is terrifying liberals who want to keep him reigned in during his presidency.
He now could receive free reign to combat radical Islam however he sees fit.
As reported at Politico, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, has commented, “You could easily see him wanting to ramp up the war on terror and take it to new parts of the globe. There are few limits on what he can do.”
Liberals, including Schiff, are afraid that because an updated legal framework hasn’t been crafted under Obama’s watch, Trump could actually begin acting on some of the campaign promises that had them freaking out. Things like the president-elect’s desire to use torture methods and threatening violence against the families of terrorists.
Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), who was the only member of Congress to vote against war authorization back in 2001, told reporters, for “an inexperienced president who tweets and gets angry … to have broad war-making power, it’s a dangerous place to be.”
Liberals are scrambling to pass an updated resolution before the inauguration, but it’s unlikely that will happen. That means Trump will have broad authority and power to direct the war on terror as he pleases.
Democrats had 8 years to take care of the issue but were content to do nothing because they were so sure Hillary would win. Maybe now they’ll both learn their lesson, and Trump will do something about the merciless barbarians.
