Back in 2008, during the presidential transition period, Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, claimed that in light of the Republican loss and supposed liberal mandate, that Bush should refrain from issuing any new regulations.
Well, rather than let Democrats get away with their double standard practices, Republican leadership has sent Obama the same message–no new regulations.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, including all 21 committee chairmen, have sent a letter to various agencies requesting they halt all pending regulations immediately, “Should you ignore this counsel, please be aware that we will work with our colleagues to ensure that Congress scrutinizes your actions — and, if appropriate, overturns them — pursuant to the Congressional Review Act.”
To no one’s surprise, the Obama administration has indicated that it will ignore the letter and continue to roll out as many damaging rules and regulations as they can before Republican leadership takes over.
Not even a week after the election, the Obama administration presented 527 new pages of regulations, more than any single year of the Obama presidency. On Monday, Obama produced the Stream Protection Rule, which places an even greater burden on coal mining than his previous rules.
Not content to further undermine coal country, on Tuesday, Obama issued a total ban on offshore drilling in the Atlantic and Arctic. In true Machiavellian fashion, Obama used his authority under the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, rather than issuing another executive order, which will make it much more difficult for Trump to reverse the rule once in office.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wasn’t too happy about the president’s latest actions, as he promised to roll back the onerous rules saying:
“When the new Congress convenes next month, I will also introduce a resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to overturn this egregious regulation and work with my colleagues to use every tool available to turn back this regulatory assault on coal country.”
Republicans have promised that they will actually start using their power to dismantle Obama’s regulatory regime after Trump’s inauguration. It’s time for them to walk the walk and roll back Obama’s disastrous policies.
